History of Colorado Springs
The first people who lived on the land that is known as Colorado Springs today were Ute, Cheyenne and Arapaho Indian tribes. However, in 1803, the land became part of the United State's Louisiana purchase, and the Colorado Springs area was designated as part of the Kansas territory in 1854.
Soon after this, it was named as part of Jefferson territory in Colorado, and just months later it became part of El Paso County. During the Pikes Peak Gold Rush of 1859, Colorado Springs exploded with growth. In 1873, the county seat of El Paso County was moved from Colorado City to Colorado Springs.
